Connecting vs. Engaging

Posted on March 27, 2010

I learned a vital communication concept this week, courtesy of Dr. Alran Bengzon of the Ateneo Professional Schools (APS).

At a meeting for the post-Congress plans of the APS Congress, Dr. Bengzon emphasized the difference between connecting and engaging.

Connecting is reaching out to your target audience and getting them interested on what you have to say and offer.

Engaging is the challenge that lies after the success of connecting. It is the vital next step that entails action towards building a lasting relationship with your audience.

For Dr. Bengzon, engaging your audience is more important. I agree. It’s what moves your vision forward.

Connecting and engaging is a lesson I will strive to keep in mind always.
